Pulmonary embolism is condition where an artery in your lung gets blocked. Mostly, the blockage causes by one or more blood clots. Mostly the blockage causes by one or more blood clots traveling to your lungs from another part of your body.
The origin of these clots is legs, arm veins, right side of heart or even at the tip of the catheter placed in vein. These clots are also formed due to some other rare causes. Mostly, pulmonary embolism is not a fatal condition. Even then pulmonary embolism is the leading cause of hospital deaths. There is greater threat to passengers of pulmonary embolism who are traveling through long airplane flights.
Factors involving in clot formation surgeries, long periods of inactivity, increased levels of blood clotting factors, some medical conditions, injury to the veins are the common causes behind pulmonary emulsion. If a blood clot is formed in your artery, it enters in the pulmonary artery and may cause a blockage. Detachment of these clots causes blockage. The reason behind this detachment is not known.
Treatment aims at reducing serious complications and death. Treatment including anti- clotting medications generally decreases the risk of death. Initially, the existing blood clots are removed with the help of medication. Anticoagulant medicine is continued though the clot is dissolved to avoid further formation of the clots.
Medication treatment is prescribed to avoid blood clotting. However, if the injury occurs in some part of the body, it results in heavy bleeding as there is low blood clotting molecules in the blood because of medications. When pulmonary embolism is a life threatening case, clot dissolving therapy, vein filtering therapy are used.
